仭What "Reading Oil Paintings" means仭

Gallery Talk August16.2001
Prof. Shinsuke UTADA

X-ray photographs show that the painters in the former half of the Meiji-era studied European traditional techniques and materials faithfully. In the latter half of the Meiji-era, painters like KURODA introduced new techniques from France, which express shade parts without using black or brown colors. However, X-ray photographs show that the traditional techniques were not passed down correctly.
