"Visionary Masterpieces of Japanese Modern Art" will be presented at The University Art Museum, Tokyo National Museum of Fine Arts and Music for the first time, which were possessed by the Royal Yi Household Fine Arts Museum of Korea, namely works by masters such as YOKOYAMA Taikan, KABURAKI Kiyokata, MAEDA Seison, TSUCHIDA Bakusen and KATAYAMA Nanpuu. The National Museum of Korea which had preserved them for more than half of a century after the Second World War, exhibited them in public last autumn, with favorable reception.

This exhibition shows 70 artworks from the collection of approximately 200, namely 45 Nihonga(Japanese paintings) and 25 craftworks. The craftworks from the 1930s to 1940s by masters such as TOMIMOTO Kenkichi, MATSUDA Gonroku, and UNNO Kiyoshi are excellent. The works were collected by the Royal Yi Household Fine Arts Museum and were displayed in the Changgyeonggung Palace in Seoul before the war.

Since 1945 after the evacuation of Japan from Korea, these artworks were under strict custody hidden from the public in spite of their importance in Japanese Modern Art History, and were known by only a few specialists from prewar catalogs.
